He was born in 13, 1967. He has no contact with his parents. Foxx credits his grandmother’s influence on him for her background in gospel music and theater which helped inspire him during his career. Foxx was also a foster brother to Micah, who is a gospel singer. In 2003, he married actress Nicole Austin and the couple have two children together: Corinne Bishop born in 2000 when he was still known as Eric Marlon Bishop and Anniston Price Bishop born when he changed his name in 2004.

At a young age, Foxx joined a street gang which led him to hustling alcohol on the streets of San Diego for money at 11 years old. He eventually ran away from home after repeated warnings from police officers about being under the legal age limit to trabslate liquor in California which led him into trouble with both law enforcement and other civilians.

At only 13 years old, he joined the United States Navy but only stayed for 4 months due to his age. After promising not to try and escape again, he was let go from the navy with an honorable discharge.

Moved to California                 

At 14 years old, Foxx started living in a Florida group home where he began acting in small roles on television shows. He eventually moved back in with his parents after they returned from California before moving out at 18 years old so that he could pursue a career in stand-up comedy.

First leading role

In 2001, Bishop took on his first leading role as singer-songwriter Ray Charles in the film adaptation of critic Terry McMillan’s novel’s (2000) which is about the life story of musician Ray Charles Robinson. Foxx gained 30 pounds for the role and spent several months learning to play piano and guitar.

He won a Best Actor Award at the 2002 BAFTA Film Awards, an Academy Award for Best Actor two years later, becoming only one of four black men to win that award ever since Sidney Poitier had won it 25 years earlier. In 2004, he made his directorial debut in the film, and went on to win an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Directing – Feature Film.
